Ernest Walter Walker was educated at Clitheroe Grammar School and Southport College. He joined the RAF and was a member of the James Bay Geological Expedition, 1930-1931. In 1937 he published a proposal for a British Antarctic Expedition, which was to carry out Arial surveys and scientific research in Victoria Land and Oates Land.
